Located in the Regional Municipality of Durham in south-central Ontario, Canada, Uxbridge is a vibrant township with a rich history and diverse communities.
The township's main center is the eponymous community of Uxbridge, surrounded by several other settlements, including Altona, Coppin's Corners, Forsythe Glenn, and more.
Named after Uxbridge, England, which derived its name from "Wixan's Bridge," the area was first settled by Quakers in 1806, with the iconic Uxbridge Friends Meeting House dating back to 1820.
Incorporated as a municipality in 1850, Uxbridge became part of Ontario County two years later. It played a significant role in transportation history, serving as the headquarters for the first passenger-carrying narrow-gauge railway in North America, the Toronto and Nipissing Railway, in 1871.
In 1974, Uxbridge Township merged with the Town of Uxbridge and Scott Township to form the expanded Township of Uxbridge under the Regional Municipality of Durham.
Today, Uxbridge is a thriving suburban community with major employers in manufacturing, including Pine Valley Packaging, Koch-Glitsch Canada, and Hela Canada. Additionally, it's home to various small industrial businesses, cultivation farms, and beekeeping organizations.
Residents enjoy access to healthcare facilities like the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital, associated with the Markham Stouffville Hospital Corporation, which recently expanded in 2022 with more plans on the way.
Uxbridge maintains strong ties with its roots, twinned with Catawissa, Pennsylvania, where many of its original settlers came from.
The township boasts a vibrant media scene with three community newspapers – the Uxbridge Times Journal, the Standard, and the Cosmos – along with a monthly magazine and events guide, Uxbridge Town Talk.
